Shiatsu for Autistic People

Shiatsu is an excellent treatment for anxiety and related conditions, which affect many autistic people. It supports autistic individuals in achieving a state of relaxation and enjoying its numerous benefits.

Shiatsu is suitable for autistic people with lower support needs, as well as those with varied support needs. Special care is taken during Shiatsu sessions to accommodate each person’s unique needs and sensitivities, and a tailored programme is created to suit each individual.

In addition to helping alleviate anxiety, Shiatsu is an effective treatment for a variety of other conditions, including insomnia, musculoskeletal pain, headaches, and more.

Traditionally, Shiatsu is performed at floor level, with the recipient lying on a special futon. However, sessions can also be conducted on a treatment bed or in a seated position. If necessary, some Shiatsu techniques can even be applied while standing.

My background in Working with Autistic People

I have been working with autistic clients since 2012, when I was invited to conduct Shiatsu sessions in care homes for autistic people with varied support needs. For the next eight years I worked in multiple care homes and day-centres for adults with autism and complex needs, providing weekly Shiatsu sessions. By adapting my approach and techniques to meet the individual needs of each person, I enabled almost all of my clients to participate in Shiatsu therapy.

I had the privilege to work alongside dedicated support workers who helped deepen my understanding of autism.

I successfully enabled participation in Shiatsu therapy for individuals who had initially refused or hesitated, allowing them to access its benefits. I continued working in this setting until March 2020, gaining years of hands-on experience with autistic people with diverse needs and preferences.

My Offer for Autistic Adults Interested in Shiatsu

If you are an autistic adult who is able to travel to and visit my therapy spaces, I encourage you to contact me to discuss further. I would need to understand your interest in Shiatsu and any possible challenges to participating in it. I am happy to answer any questions you may have as well.

Once all questions have been answered, and if you decide to proceed with therapy, we will agree on a treatment plan specifically suited to your needs.

You can expect Shiatsu to be pleasant and therapeutic, helping your body feel light and relaxed, calming your mind, improving your sleep, and addressing other symptoms you may wish to manage.

My Offer for Carers of Autistic Adults with Varied Needs

If you are a carer for an autistic individual with significant support needs who cannot participate in a typical Shiatsu session or is unable to travel, I offer to teach you the skills to provide a simple Shiatsu treatment yourself.

By learning the basic principles of Shiatsu, training with like-minded carers, and receiving personalised guidance, you will be able to support those in your care in a new and meaningful way.
